You may start your program in one of two ways. The first way is to simply enroll in a class. All ALPD courses are graduate level and require students to have completed an undergraduate degree. This first option is helpful for those wanting to "test the water" about graduate study or their interest in this degree program. You will be required to apply for admission by the time you have completed 12 credit hours of the master's degree and two classes in the concentration you have chosen.
The second way to start the program is to apply for admission and be admitted to the degree program or concentration. All students interested in earning the master's degree or concentration must complete all application processes. For detailed application information go to <http://www.educ.drake.edu/application/adult_learning/default.html> or contact Dr. Thomas Westbrook (515-271-3078).
For further information, see Planning.
The University Book Store, an independently owned business at 3003 Forest Avenue, offers textbooks as well as school supplies, reference books, novels, magazines and cards and book buyback. Hours are 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Phone or fax The University Book Store (phone 1-800-430-9875 or 515-274-3401 locally; fax 515-274-3407).
The new online version of the University Book Store's popular textbook reservation service already is accepting reservations for courses. Students using the online service may pick up their books by the first day of class at the University Book Store, 3003 Forest Ave., or make arrangements to have the books shipped to them. Visit the site at: University Bookstore
Credit card purchases are welcome as the Bookstore's Web site supports secure submission of credit card information using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology built into popular Web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. Again, remember to leave enough time to get the books in the mail before the class begins.
If you order from another source, remember to allow time for delivery.
Graduate students should obtain a Drake photo ID through the Student Life Office in Olmsted Center. If you lose your ID card, you must pay a $15 replacement fee at the Student Accounts Office, 102 Old Main. Upon presentation of the receipt, the Student Life Office will issue a replacement ID. Your student ID can be used to check out library materials and for admission to the Bell Center facilities, Drake athletic events, and special campus lectures, performances, etc. Discounts on concert tickets and other special offers are available throughout the academic year.
Your Drake student ID card is also your library card. For more information about libraries, access the Library FAQs or call Cowles Library (271-2111).
The most current information about PIN numbers is available from the Registrar's office. If your PIN does not seem to be working, check first with the Registrar's Office. If you have other questions about PINs, contact the HelpDesk at 271-3001.
Email accounts for new students are established approximately two weeks before the start of their first acedmic term. To obtain email user IDs and passwords, students should access MyDUSIS following the Current Students link on the Drake homepage.
All motor vehicles parked on University property must be registered with the University. Vehicle registration stickers or hangtags are available for a fee at the D-Shoppe in Olmsted Center, at Student Accounts in Old Main, and at the Drake University Bookstore on Forest Avenue. Please be prepared to describe your vehicle by license plate number, make, and color at the time you obtain your sticker. This sticker/hangtag allows you to park in permit parking lots on campus, including the lot south of Aliber Hall.
Students may also choose to park in the visitor pay lot east of Aliber Hall. The most economical method for parking in this lot is to purchase a book of Lot Dots from the Information Booth as you enter the lot.
University parking regulations are posted online.
Drake's Olmsted Center is the student union/university center. It is a focal point for students of all ages. The building offers areas for study, large and small meeting rooms, and Bulldog Theater, a 238-seat auditorium. For information about reserving rooms for meetings or study, contact the Olmsted reservations at (515) 271-3987. A lounge designed for commuter students is located on the first level of Olmsted Center. The Commuter Student Lounge is equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, and a phone for local calls. Study tables and lounges are available.
The student lounge in Olmsted Center is a convenient and comfortable place
to study or share a soda.
A student-run MyDUSIS resource has been designed to help you understand MyDUSIS, what's available on it, what problems you might encounter, and how to fix them. E-mail ASKMYDUSIS@drake.edu with your questions.
When you apply for admission into the program, one of the full-time ALPD faculty will be assigned as your advisor. Your advisor will help you choose classes and monitor your progress towards meeting the requirements for your degree. You should contact your advisor before registering for classes.
If you just want to take a few classes to see if this program is right for you, contact Dr. Thomas Westbrook (271- ) with any questions. See Planning for courses that are particularly appropriate for those who want to explore the program without committing to a degree.
Each term the ALPD program offers one-credit-hour required and elective courses that provide admitted and visiting students the opportunity to experience graduate-level courses or to learn about specific topics:
Those seeking a degree are advised to take ADED 247, Adult and Organizational Learning, early in their program. Offered in the fall, this 3-hour foundation course investigates factors that affect adult learning and the organizational cultures that promote or inhibit learning.
Course descriptions and course schedules are available at the ADED home page or from the School of Education (515-271-3726),
After completing 12 hours, students must complete a Petition of Candidacy to continue in the program.
While this sequence of courses is recommended, it is not required.
Students in the Omaha cohorts or in affiliate programs with other institutions need to sequence their courses carefully, as required courses are not offered every semester.
After completing 24 hours in the program, students are eligible to take ADED 219, Applied Research in Adult Learning. This required capstone course offers an opportunity to conduct applied research on a topic of interest.
Internships can be arranged with Dr. Thomas Westbrook.
Information about graduation and commencement is available from the Office of the Registrar (271-3901).
Blackboard is Drake Universitys online learning web site. Many professors use this site to share course information and communicate. You must know your Drake email address and PIN number to use this site. If you experience difficulties, please contact the HelpDesk at 271-3001 or send an email message to bbsupport@drake.edu.

The D-Book directory listing is also available online. Your name, address, phone, and Drake email address will be listed in the D-Book unless you specifically request that your personal information not be included by contacting the Office of Student Records at 271-3901.
To receive a copy of your academic transcript or have one sent to another institution, contact Student Accounts by mail at Drake University, 2507 University Avenue, Des Moines, IA, or by fax at 271-4004. The transcript fee must be paid before services are provided. After payment is received, your request will be forwarded to the Office of Student Records for processing. A bulk rate is offered when four or more transcripts are requested at the same time.
End-of-term grade reports are not withheld from students because of financial indebtedness. However, holds are placed on the release of permanent records (transcripts). The Registrar will not release transcripts until the student has made satisfactory arrangements with the office that placed the hold. The Office of Student Records promptly notifices students if there is any reason that they cannot comply with q request for a transcript.
Financial aid is available for students who are formally admitted to a Drake Degree program, have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), apply on a timely basis and complete verification. All students must meet the minimum satisfactory progress requirements to receive financial aid. More information is available from the Office of Student Financial Planning, Carnegie Hall, 271-2905.
