Application Procedures

Please submit all of the following to:

A. Complete the Drake Graduate Admissions Application form.

Available at http://www.drake.edu/admissions/graduate.html

B. Pay Graduate Application fee (Existing and former Drake students may be exempt from this fee. Contact Admissions for further details.)

C. Forward official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate coursework from previously attended universities. (All Drake coursework is already on file.)

D. Submit updated Professional Resume or Curriculum Vita

E. Submit 3 or the 4 following indicators of Scholarly / Professional Potential

1. Achievement of the minimum score on one of the following standardized tests

      a. Graduate Record Exam (GRE): Verbal = 400 and Quantitative = 460

      or

      b. Miller Analogy Test (MAT) = 36

2. Submit an indicator of Writing Competency

      a. A score of 4.0 on the Analytical Writing Section of the Graduate Records Exam (GRE)

      or

      b. A written response under a controlled environment to a topical question developed by the School of Education. There will be a $20.00 for this service, which will be offered only twice a month on the first Tuesday and third Wednesday of the month. Scheduling for the written exam will be made with Linda Hollister or Bonnie Porter at the Drake School of Education. (Click here for further details.) The School of Education will evaluate the sample based on the criteria below:

      Not Acceptable

      1. Provides competent analysis of complex ideas

         

      2. Develops and supports main points with relevant reasons and/or well-choosen examples

         

      3. Is generally focused and well organized

         

      4. Uses appropriate sentence variety and vocabulary to convey meaning clearly

         

      5. Demonstrates satisfactory control of sentence structure and language usage, but may have minor errors that do not interfere with meaning.

         

3. Submit Grade Point Average meeting the following minimum criteria

    Undergraduate GPA 2.5 (in major) and/or Graduate GPA 3.0

    (If a student has a low undergraduate GPA and has not taken any classes at the graduate level or has also performed poorly at the graduate level they can take courses from the SOE, in their desired major, as a non-degree students.  Upon completion of a minimum of 6 hours, (maximum of 12) as a non-degreed student, the applicant may submit their transcripts to be used as evidence of meeting the Grade Point Average criteria.)

4. Submit Two (2) Professional Letters of Recommendation Forms

The forms should indicate support of graduate activityand obtained from those who know the applicant's professional potential, scholarly work or academic potential Letters should be submitted on the Drake University School of Education Recommendation Form- Available at http://www.educ.drake.edu/application/SOE_ltr_of_rec_form.htm
