PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
(Dr. Jack A. Gerlovich, Drake University)

GENERAL

Research interests focus primarily upon science safety in elementary, middle, high school, and college settings. Below is a listing of some of major publications in this area.

During the past 15 years, Dr. Gerlovich has worked with numerous science/education colleagues from throughout the US to conduct research, and prepare practical tools for addressing safety issues raised by this research, in academic science settings. Results are generally compiled and shared with the science education community via publications in professional journals (some of which appear below) and presentations at state and national meetings.

To date, customized science safety tools and research studies have been conducted, or are in the process, in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawai`i, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Pennsylvania,Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Working with state teams, the research results are then melded into interactive electronic tools and webpages:

1. federal and statutory laws, codes, and professional standards
2. teacher understanding of these professional obligations
3. the status of teaching environments, including facilities, equipment, and procedures
4. chemical management procedures
