spend considerable time conducting a functional behavior assessment (FBA)
and writing an appropriate behavior intervention plan (BIP) to address
a student's behavioral issues. Despite these efforts, numerous due process
hearings are held each year because the BIP was not effectively implemented.
This session will address specific approaches and procedures to ensure
the integrity of the FBA and corresponding BIP is implemented and monitored.

Purpose of the session
is to present an overview of the Iowa Department of Education’s
early childhood initiative for program wide positive behavior supports
(PW-PBS). PW-PBS is a process for understanding and resolving the problem
behavior of children, generally aged 3-6, that is based on values and
empirical research. It offers an approach for developing an understanding
of why the child engages in problem behavior and strategies for preventing
the occurrence of problem behavior while teaching the child new skills.
Positive behavior support offers a holistic approach that considers all
factors that impact on a child and the child’s behavior. It can
be used to address problem behaviors that range from aggression, tantrums,
and property destruction to social withdrawal. This session will share
information and evaluation outcomes for the state’s first year of
implementation and the ongoing training opportunities The session will
also include an opportunity to hear about Iowa’s unique work with
the Center for Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL).

Purpose of the session is to present an overview
of the Iowa High School Project (IHSP) and the links with Positive Behavioral
Supports. IHSP was developed to assist high schools in the transformation
from promising to proven institutions of learning for students by focusing
on rigorous, relevant curriculum as well as strong faculty-student relationships.
In partnership with the International Center for Leadership in Education
(ICLE), the Bureau of Student and Family Support Services provides professional
development and targeted technical assistance to selected schools across
the state of Iowa. Presenters will discuss (1) IHSP components, (2) systems
evaluation from year one implementation, (3) systems survey and learning
criteria, (4) links to positive behavioral supports and other state initiatives,
and (5) project participation.

session will discuss specific and effective strategies for managing the

Secondary, or targeted interventions, are intended to reduce the
number of existing cases of problem behaviors by establishing efficient
and rapid pro-active responses to problem behavior using systems embedded
within the school. These systems are intended to help students with
on-going behavioral problems to engage in more appropriate behavior by
more closely monitoring and giving them feedback regarding their behavior
as it relates to the school-wide behavioral expectations. This session
is intended to provide an overview of the key features of targeted interventions
and emphasizes the importance of creating interventions that address the
types of behavioral problems that exist within your school, while at the
same time take into consideration the culture of your school.
