Jaynette Rittman, Principal of Garton Elementary, has successfully implemented PBS for four years. She will discuss the process of establishing school-wide systems while focusing on targeted academic and behavioral interventions in her building. Tier II reading, check-in/check-out, re-teaching and how to build community will be specifically discussed in her presentation.

1D - Collaborating for the Greater Good - Multiple Initiatives (PBS, Circle of Courage, Character Counts!)

Come to this session and hear how these frameworks are being integrated to benefit both students and staff members. The similarities and differences of approaches will be shared as well as considerations in implementing these in your school. Importantly, examples from schools where these initiatives are concurrently being implemented successfully will be shared.

1E - FBAs & BIPs: Maintaining Integrity & Effective Implementation

School personnel can spend considerable time conducting a functional behavior assessment (FBA) and writing an appropriate behavior intervention plan (BIP) to address a student's behavioral issues. Despite these efforts, numerous due process hearings are held each year because the BIP was not effectively implemented. This session will address specific approaches and procedures to ensure the integrity of the FBA and corresponding BIP is implemented and monitored.

1H - Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and Instructional Decision Making (IDM)

This session is designed for participants interested in learning more about the similarities and differences between PBS and IDM. Participants will learn about the definition and guiding principles of both PBS and IDM. The presenter will also discuss the conceptual and operational models of IDM as compared to PBS. Lastly, participants will learn more about the implementation of both systems.

2A - Targeted Interventions

This session will focus on the Behavior Education Program (BEP) which addresses the needs of students who make up the yellow zone of the triangle. Targeted behavioral interventions can create consistency across school settings for data collection.
Tips and strategies will be presented.

2B - An Iowa Approach to Implementing Program Wide Positive Behavior
Supports (PW-PBS) in Early Childhood Settings

Purpose of the session is to present an overview of the Iowa Department of Education’s early childhood initiative for program wide positive behavior supports (PW-PBS). PW-PBS is a process for understanding and resolving the problem behavior of children, generally aged 3-6, that is based on values and empirical research. It offers an approach for developing an understanding of why the child engages in problem behavior and strategies for preventing the occurrence of problem behavior while teaching the child new skills. Positive behavior support offers a holistic approach that considers all factors that impact on a child and the child’s behavior. It can be used to address problem behaviors that range from aggression, tantrums, and property destruction to social withdrawal. This session will share information and evaluation outcomes for the state’s first year of implementation and the ongoing training opportunities The session will also include an opportunity to hear about Iowa’s unique work with the Center for Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL).

Partnering in Communities: Strong Families, Strong Communities brings together a diverse group of community leaders to create a strong community culture that supports parents in helping their children learn at home and in school. Modeling Positive Behavior Supports throughout the community is one example of creating a supportive environment for families and youth. Participants in the Perry IA pilot of Partnering in Communities will share information about the project, engage participants in interactive tasks from the project, and provide information about how your community can get involved.

3B - The Iowa High School Project: Links with Positive Behavioral Supports

Purpose of the session is to present an overview of the Iowa High School Project (IHSP) and the links with Positive Behavioral Supports. IHSP was developed to assist high schools in the transformation from promising to proven institutions of learning for students by focusing on rigorous, relevant curriculum as well as strong faculty-student relationships. In partnership with the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE), the Bureau of Student and Family Support Services provides professional development and targeted technical assistance to selected schools across the state of Iowa. Presenters will discuss (1) IHSP components, (2) systems evaluation from year one implementation, (3) systems survey and learning criteria, (4) links to positive behavioral supports and other state initiatives, and (5) project participation
.

3C - Facilitated Roundtable Family Session

This session is primarily for family reps but all are welcome. We will facilitate an informal roundtable discussion of issues pertaining to the role of the family representative on Leadership teams. What is working for you? What are your concerns and needs? Bring ideas to share and questions to ask.If time allows, we will work on developing individual family involvement plans for your school.

4A - Linking Positive Youth Development Principles and Practices within PBS Frameworks

Positive youth development is grounded in the research-based knowledge that all children and youth have the four basic developmental needs of belonging, independence, generosity, and mastery. Studies indicate that youth whose needs are met in positive ways are likely to develop into active citizens and contributing members of their families and communities. Participants will explore how they can support and implement positive youth development principles and practices that address these four basic needs of students within the PBS framework.

4B - Breaking the Cycle of Behavioral Failure with
Mentoring: A Tertiary Intervention

Several PBS schools in the Midwest and southern US implemented resiliency mentoring as a tertiary intervention. The session will highlight student selection, staff training, and program maintenance, as well as current results from this project.

Even experienced educators who are familiar with the issues surrounding emotional and behavior disorders in children find themselves with students who present extreme challenges. These situations often require the special attention and the collaborative efforts of teachers, school psychologists, campus administrators, community agencies, and parents. This session will discuss methods and specific approaches for designing, managing, and implementing intensive interventions.

4D - Classroom Interventions

4E - Providing Positive Behavioral Supports: A Focus on Policy and Legal Directions for Students with Individualized Support Needs (Updated!)

This session will emphasize the relationship of PBS to meeting the behavioral needs of a wide range of students; including those who may qualify as being in need of special education as well as students with mental health needs. 5B - Developing Youth PBS Leadership Teams

This session will focus on the critical importance of engaging students in meaningful ways within schools’ PBS frameworks by the development of Youth PBS Leadership Teams. In an open discussion format, hear from adults and youth how they are working together to strengthen their school’s positive climate. Adults and youth will share and answer questions regarding topics such as the steps involved in developing Youth PBS Leadership Teams and the benefits of youth and adults working together as partners.

 

5C - Focus Group Information from Youth

Participants will have the opportunity to learn what elementary, middle, and high school youth are sharing regarding changes in their schools’ environment with the implementation of PBS at their schools. 5D - Behavioral De-Escalation: Effective Strategies to Prevent Power Struggles

Challenging behaviors can be very stressful and are frequently disruptive to the regular academic activities in the classroom. Even with effective preventive strategies in place these events still occur. This session will discuss specific and effective strategies for managing the cycle of acting-out behavior in the classroom.

5E - Targeted Interventions

Secondary, or targeted interventions,  are intended to reduce the number of existing cases of problem behaviors by establishing efficient and rapid pro-active responses to problem behavior using systems embedded within the school.  These systems are intended to help students with on-going behavioral problems to engage in more appropriate behavior by more closely monitoring and giving them feedback regarding their behavior as it relates to the school-wide behavioral expectations.  This session is intended to provide an overview of the key features of targeted interventions and emphasizes the importance of creating interventions that address the types of behavioral problems that exist within your school, while at the same time take into consideration the culture of your school.
