The special education programs are designed to prepare highly competent special educators to teach in public and private school settings to students with behavioral/emotional disorders, learning disabilities, or mental disabilities. The program accomodates applicants with a variety of backgrounds and interests, and with or without previous special education training.
Endorsements
The School of Education offers courses leading to endorsements in the State of Iowa in the following areas:

Admissions
A person seeking admission to one of the programs in special education should:
2. Arrange for a copy of undergraduate transcripts and any graduate work to be sent to the Admissions office.
3. Arrange to complete either the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record of Examination (GRE) or call the Career Center at (515)271-3721.
Entrance Requirements
The applicant must meet all of the requirements for admission to SOE and the following:
2. receive a minimum score of 36 on the MAT or a combined minimum score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE;
3. have earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (4 point scale), a 3.0 grade point average for any previous education course work completed, and a 3.0 grade point average for any previous course work in special education;
4. meet Iowa certification requirements to teach in preschool, elementary, middle, or secondary classrooms.
